They wind up playing very differently from the finalized incarnation of the card game released physically in 1999, with some of the games having Elemental RockPaperScissors, lacking Effect Monsters, having a hard limit on Spell/Trap Cards, and other wacky rules
I think that level up is a fun idea for a mechanic that wants to emulate D&D and its leveling systems
